WHERE ARE THEY NOW? CATCHING UP WITH TSI’S ALUMNI LAUREN SICARI!
It has been almost four years since Lauren Sicari graced the halls of Tenaj Salon Institute. We caught up with her at Salon Jaylee Colony Plaza in The Villages, Florida, where she is a Senior Designer.
How has life been since you graduated from TSI?
Life after graduating, I’ve slowly grown into the person I’ve always wanted to be. I have sharpened my skills and gave myself promotions and have been able to create art with hair and makeup.
Not only did I want a career that I’m passionate about, but I wanted a future. I happened to meet my husband while he was getting his haircut by my friend at the salon. A few years later, I’m now a wife, A NEW MOM, and a hairstylist. I do believe everything happens for a reason.
What is your favorite thing about being a cosmetologist?
My favorite thing is that feeling someone gets when you show them the look you created, and you can feel their spirits lift, and their mood completely changes. I’m a natural caregiver, making people happy and confident is why I get out of bed in the morning.
Do you feel like TSI prepared you for a career as a stylist, if so how so?
Tenaj prepared me in every way! They gave us textbook knowledge, preparing us immensely for the State Board Exams. They brought in top artists from the industry to share their stories and give us techniques we couldn’t get anywhere else. We were also given numerous clients to work on, using a level system to keep up with our daily professional goals and creating a business of promoting ourselves, which is used in my salon, so it was a smooth transition.
What was your favorite class at TSI?
My favorite class was when we learned the actual basics of hair. What hair is made out of, the chemistry behind it. The geometry of how to cut hair. Learning about the anatomy of a person, and how it all works with your hair was a game-changer for me. It’s more than just “playing with hair,” you’ll find that out on your first day.
Why did you choose TSI?
I chose Tenaj because when I first walked in, the energy was so positive that the school itself looks like an actual salon, which many beauty schools don’t. I was given a tour right away, and one of the first people I saw in one a classroom was April Kendrick. Her light beamed through, and her energy was like no one I’ve ever seen-still to this day. She was the one that made my decision. She and the rest of the staff really made a real difference in my life.
What would you say to people who are thinking about cosmetology school, and why should they go to Tenaj Salon Institute?
I say if it’s in your gut-do it! I wish I had done it years ago. Cosmetology changed my life in so many different ways.
I would say choose Tenaj Salon Institute because they are trying to change the stigma of Cosmetologists. They make sure each student is keeping up with the latest education and trends. Talking to students on how much income you can make. They were showing you how you can be your own boss and be passionate at a place that doesn’t feel like a job.
