We recently caught up with Lake and Sumter Style’s 2020 Best of the Best Hair Stylist nominee and TSI graduate Savannah Zuk. Savannah currently works at Surface Salon in Mount Dora, Florida. She specializes in blonding, beaded weft extensions, and lived-in color. She also believes knowledge is power; that continuous learning and growing will set you apart from the next stylist. Your education is the key to being successful in this industry.
How has life been since you graduated from TSI?
It’s been FABULOUS. I’m 20 years old, with a career that I love. How much better can it get? I graduated at the end of February 2019, and I was a Licensed Cosmetologist by March. I am now an independent contractor at Surface Salon in Mount Dora, Florida, which has brought me many great opportunities.
What is your favorite thing about being a cosmetologist?
Truthfully, I said it while in school, it was my “why,” I chose this industry because there is no better feeling than making someone else feel beautiful. Yes, you make them look gorgeous, but that internal confidence is what I love to bring out in my clients. If I can change one person’s mindset about themselves, and show them how beautiful they are, I did what I was supposed to do. I also love that everything is continually evolving, new trends, new techniques, you won’t be bored unless you stop learning!
Do you feel like TSI prepared you for a career as a stylist, if so how so?
I do! I feel like with any school experience, there will be a mixture of feelings. I had the best experience at TSI, and I couldn’t be more grateful. The hands-on experiences TSI gave me allowed me to jump in full throttle before being thrown into the salon world. I think that’s what sets TSI apart from other schools!
What was your favorite class at TSI?
My favorite class had to be learning different foiling techniques from a Schwarzkopf Educator, Juli Waits. Blondes are my specialty, and I can foil soooo fast now. I thoroughly enjoyed her class!
Why did you choose TSI?
I chose TSI not only because one of my friends went there before I did and recommended it, but because you learn so much hands-on, and I think that’s the best way to learn in our industry. To jump in and do it. I was not just practicing on a mannequin all day.
What would you say to people who are thinking about cosmetology school, and why should they go to Tenaj Salon Institute?
I say if you have a love for this industry, then DO IT. Many people are afraid of what people will say about not going to a Traditional College, or “hairstylists don’t make that much money.” Traditional Colleges aren’t for everyone, you have to LOVE what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life. If there are people who are worried about the financial aspect of it, talk to me! I’m 20 years old, making something of myself. The possibilities are endless when you have such a drive and passion for this industry. If you’re looking to get your hands in hair and learn to the fullest, then TSI is your go-to.
