How-to Choose the Perfect Haircut for your Face Shape

Choosing the perfect haircut for yourself can be a daunting task. What will look good? What won’t look good? What will look BEST?

Overcome the fear of trying something new by doing your research ahead of time. To determine what haircut or style is perfect for you, you must take your face shape into consideration. There are 7 main types of face shapes including: square, round, triangle, oblong, oval, diamond, and heart.

Once you identify your face shape, you can easily decide what haircut will be most flattering with the placement of your beautiful facial features!

For those with a square-shaped face

Think Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, and Angelina Jolie. If you have a square-shaped face, the height and width of your face is comparable. The length of your jaw is the approximate length of your forehead.

Haircuts to try out:

  • A-line, chin-length bob
  • Long layers with side bangs
  • Short, slight bangs that touch the cheekbones

Haircuts to avoid:

  • Jaw-length blunt bob
  • Pixie with blunt bangs
  • Long, heavy bangs

For those with a round-shaped face

Think Drew Barrymore, Kate Bosworth, and Selena Gomez. If you have a round-shaped face, you often get told you have a “baby face”. The width and length of your face is comparable.

Haircuts to try out:

  • Long, layers
  • Lob with side part
  • Side-swept bangs

Haircuts to avoid:

  • Shorter layers
  • Non-voluminous pixie
  • Bob with blunt bangs

For those with a triangle-shaped face

Think Jennifer Lawrence, Lucy Hale, and Kelly Osbourne. If you have a triangle-shaped face, also known as a pear-shaped face, you have a narrow forehead with a larger jawline.

Haircuts to try out:

  • Lengthy cuts
  • Lob with volume up top
  • Layers around face

Haircuts to avoid:

  • One-length cuts
  • Pixie cut
  • Short, textured bangs

For those with a oblong-shaped face

Think Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Winslet, and Lisa Kudrow. If you have an oblong-shaped face, your face is recognized by its long and narrow bone structure. Similar to an oval-shaped face, you have a narrow face with a longer chin.

Haircuts to try out:

  • Medium-length with flip-out layers
  • Short layers
  • Angled bob with layers

Haircuts to avoid:

  • Long hair with side bangs
  • Chin-length styles that lack volume
  • Excessive volume up top

For those with an oval-shaped face

Think Beyonce, Cameron Diaz, and Julia Roberts. If you have an oval-shaped face, the length is greater than the width, and your jaw is more narrow than your cheekbones. Because your face is proportional, you can pull off most haircuts!

Haircuts to try out:

  • A-line bob
  • Layers around the cheekbones, lips, or chin
  • Shoulder length with slight layers

Haircuts to avoid:

  • Heavy bangs
  • One-length cuts
  • Excessive volume up top

For those with a diamond-shaped face

Think Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Megan Fox. If you have a diamond-shaped face, your face’s length is somewhat longer than it’s width. Your chin comes to a point, just like a diamond!

Haircuts to try out:

  • Angled pixie
  • Medium-length style
  • Short, textured lob

Haircuts to avoid:

  • Heavy, rounded bangs
  • Voluminous pixie
  • Excessive layers

For those with a heart-shaped face

Think Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, and Tyra Banks. If you have a heart-shaped face, you rock a wider forehead and narrower chin. Your hairline is the widest part of your face and your cheekbones pop!

Haircuts to try out:

  • Shoulder length bob
  • Medium length with flicked-out layers
  • Side-swept bangs

Haircuts to avoid:

  • Short bangs
  • Excessive short layers
  • Voluminous pixie
